Rebates & Funding

Can I use private health insurance?

Yes. If you have Private Health Insurance with Extra or Ancillary cover, you can likely claim a rebate from your insurance. How much you can claim depends on your policy and level of cover. Using your cover for Dietetics is a way to make use of your Private Health.

We can process Private Health rebate via Tyro Health Online https://www.tyrohealth.com/tho/, which allows us to claim directly from major insurance providers in Australia via the HICAPs system. Alternatively, paid invoices can be used to claim with your Private Health Insurance.

Are there rebates available?

For clients residing in Australia, if eligible a Chronic Condition Management Plan (CCMP) or Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan (EDP) can be obtained through a GP. These are Medicare plans (by the government) which provide a current rebate of $63.40 per session.

If you have a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan and Support at Home (SAH) packages, they may cover your dietetic consultation fees.

How do I obtain a Chronic Management Plan or Eating Disorder Plan?

A GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (CCMP) includes up to five sessions of allied health care, which could include up to five sessions with a dietitian or split with other allied care, as recommended by your general practitioner (doctor). Eligibility will be determined by your GP’s assessment.

An Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan (EDP) includes up to 40 psychology sessions and up to 20 dietetic sessions. This requires assessment or diagnosis by a general practitioner, psychiatrist or paediatrician. If you are not eligible for this plan, you may be eligible for the Chronic Management Plan.

Note: if you have an Eating Disorder Plan, you need to be reviewed at certain timepoints. Please refer to this Quick Guide by Butterfly Foundation: https://butterfly.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Butterfly_Medicare-quickGuide_A4_WEB-FA.pdf

I have a NDIS Plan, can it cover my dietetic consultation fees?

Yes but it will depend on 1) if your NDIS plan includes funding for allied health supports, usually under Capacity Building (Improved Health and Wellbeing) or Core (Improved Daily Living Skills). 2) Secondly, it depends on your Plan type. If your NDIS plan is:

  • Self-managed, you can see any qualified Accredited Practising Dietitian.

  • Plan-managed, check with your Plan Manager if you are able to see a non-Registered Provider.

  • NDIA-managed, you will have to see an Accredited Practising Dietitian who is formally registered with the NDIS Commission.

I (or my parent) has Support At Home package, can it cover consultation fees and oral nutrition supplements?

Yes, Support At Home Support At Home package can cover dietetic care provided by an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD). Dietetic care is part of Clinical Supports (Allied Health and Other Therapeutic Services).

It can also cover the full cost of oral nutrition supplements if they are classified as ‘Foods for Special Medical Purposes’ and prescribed by a dietitian. General supermarket health foods, standard groceries, or products intended purely for general weight loss rather than a diagnosed medical/age-related clinical need will not be funded for.
